A count, and what the words were

A number on its own tells you very little. The words behind it tell you what the page is about.

  1. A count with the furniture removed

nav, header, footer, script and style are stripped, and the main element is preferred when the page marks one up. What is left is closer to the text a reader actually reads.

  2. The twenty most repeated words

Per page, with common stop words dropped, and a count against each one. This is the table, not a summary of it.

  3. Share of the total

Each word as a percentage of the page's word count. This is where a page nominally about one thing but repeating another twenty times gives itself away.

  4. Twenty-five pages side by side

Thin pages surface by sorting a single column, and a section of a site that was written in one afternoon is visible in the pattern.

Five readings worth taking

Word count is a symptom, never a target. Read it that way and it becomes useful.

What it will not tell you

Worth knowing before you rely on the results.

Common questions

How many words should a page have?

There is no number. Google has said explicitly that word count is not a ranking factor. Length is useful as a comparison between your own pages and useless as a target.

Why is your count different from another tool's?

Because the two tools disagree about what counts as content. This one strips nav, header, footer, script and style, and prefers the main element when a page has one. Neither answer is wrong; they answer slightly different questions.

What exactly is stripped out of the count?

The nav, header, footer, script and style elements. When a page marks up a main element, the count is taken from inside it. On a site that uses none of those, shared furniture will be counted as content.

What is keyword density and should I care?

The share column is keyword density. It is worth a glance and it is not a strategy. Useful for noticing that a page repeats a term thirty times; not a dial to tune toward a number.

Word counts are one tab of the checker

The same run also returns titles, meta descriptions, headings, links, images and structured data. One run gives you all seven tables, each with its own CSV.
